A MUSICAL HIT MAN IS “ALL IN”
While the dean of New Jersey harmonica players, Rob Paparozzi, will headline Sunday’s Blues-A-Palooza at Tim McCloone’s Supper Club in Asbury Park, one very talented singer-songwriter and guitarist who hasn’t been back to the Jersey Shore in some time will perform earlier in the afternoon.
Dave Fields, raised in Bergen County and New York City, will bring his trio to the Supper Club Sunday afternoon for Jersey Shore Jazz and Blues Foundation’s now-annual fundraiser.
Fields’ spry, groundbreaking original blues and blues-rock tunes, over the course of four albums, have ushered him into the national spotlight in recent years.
The guitar playing on Fields’ latest release, “All In,” contains echoes of Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Muddy Waters, to name a few. What’s more, one of the top talent spotters in the world of blues, the Godfather of British Blues, John Mayall, included a Fields song on his new album. Mayall recorded Fields’ song, “Train to My Heart” on his 2014 album, “Tough.”
Pressed on his approach to songwriting, Fields, answering his cell phone on the way to Stanhope House where he runs the Tuesday night jam session with Johnny Charles and others, said he can’t remember a time he wasn’t interested in blues. His father ran commercial jingle studios in Bergen County and in New York City, so as a kid, Fields often found himself in the company of people like Stevie Wonder and Sammy Kahn.
“Honestly, since I was a kid, I was always attracted to the blues. The first songs I wrote as a kid were blues songs. I feel like it’s always been in my blood,” he said. “It’s weird how life is. I remember as a young kid listening to my father play piano, and one day he plays me this elaborate Jerry Lee Lewis type thing. From that day on, I was hooked on the blues, and my dad is from North Florida, he actually grew up not far from where Ray Charles grew up.”
Fields credits his father — Sammy “Forever” Fields — still active as recording studio owner, with urging him to learn how to play a lot of different instruments in a lot of different styles.
“Unlike many blues musicians, I was raised to be a musical ‘hit man.’ I got to do sessions with many famous musicians and producers like Tommy James and Ahmet Ertegun,” he explained.
After graduating from the Berklee College of Music, Fields spent time lending his expertise to musicians like Steve Jordan, Alex Foster, Dave Valentin, blues singer Roxy Perry and Billy Martin of Medeski, Martin and Wood.
For an audience unfamiliar with Fields or any of his four albums —or his hit song, “Rabbi Blues” — Fields says he prefers to think of himself as a multifaceted musician who is grounded in blues.
At Supper Club on Sunday, he’ll be accompanied by John Meola on bass and Jerry Lobozzo, drums.
“I like to do a mixture of things because I was always exposed to so many things in New York City, such a melting pot of people and cultures,” Fields said.
“You’ll hear blues and blues-rock for sure, but you’ll also hear funk, jazz, country, rock ’n’ roll and even Latin music. I like to keep people guessing, keep them on their toes.”

Dave Fields Interview by Roger Z theworkingmusician.com
/in Uncategorized /by davefieldsCheck out this interview of me by Roger Z for theworkingmusician.com
http://theworkingmusician.com/reviews/MusicMasterDaveFields.html
Roger-Z: You grew up down south and in NY with a famous musician father. How did that influence you?
Dave Fields: Wow, in so many ways! Growing up the son of Sammy “Forever” Fields took me on an amazing musical adventure. At a young age, my father would take me out of school and bring me to recording studios where I would observe the whole process. My dad always hired heavy-hitter musicians. As an aspiring young guitarist, I got to do sessions with top NYC players including guitarists such as Bob DeVoe and Steve Bill. I also go to see at close range what it took to be a professional composer/arranger/producer. My family moved to Demarest, NJ when I was in grade school and my father built a “world class” recording studio in our home frequented by the likes of Stevie Wonder and Barbara Streisand among others. Being surrounded by that talent was inspiring.
Roger-Z: When and how did you catch the bug to become a “Rocker?”
Dave Fields:I was born to “Rock” – LOL! My first love was Fifties Rock and Roll followed by The Beatles. From a young age I knew all I wanted to do was play guitar. The more I studied music, the more I realized how guitar was the driving force behind Rock and Roll. As I progress with my music, I realize how all of what I loved as a kid stemmed from the blues. My dad would play piano for my sister and I when we were kids and he would always play this Jerry Lee Lewis song, “Great Balls of Fire.” When I heard it, I would go nuts! That song is the perfect blend of Blues and Rock and Roll.
Roger-Z: How did you come to play all the instruments on your album, “Time’s a Wastin’?”
Dave Fields: Here’s the long answer. My father was my mentor. He always tried to prepare me for any musical situation. One of those by-products was that he encouraged me to become a multi-instrumentalist. At a young age I took piano, bass, drum, and guitar lessons. I began with piano. As I got older, I picked up mandolin, pedal steel, ukulele and more! Also, economic concerns factored into my playing all the instruments on that record!
Roger-Z: How did you entice John Mayall to cover your song, “Train to My Heart?”
Dave Fields: I didn’t entice him! That was luck! He heard my song on one of The Big City Blues Magazine (of which I am the NYC contributor) CD samplers. I can’t describe how excited I was to get a call from Mayall out of the blue asking for the lyrics! That was one of the most exciting days in my life.
Roger-Z: Your most recent CD, “All In,” has resided near the top of the US RMR Top 50 Blues Rock Chart for over half a year! To what do you attribute its success?
Dave Fields: First of all, I’ve been so fortunate to have the support of fans from all over the US as well as all over the world. Rick Lusher, my PR agent, does a fabulous job. At the time of this interview, “All In” lists at #10 on The RMR Top 50 Blues Rock Charts and has been in the top 10 since August 25, 2014. Interesting enough, people love our cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog!” Lastly, I tried to capture the fire of my stage show on this CD. For example, we cut “Changes in My Life” live in the studio. I only overdubbed a few vocal lines and added tambourine.
Roger-Z: Tell me about your projected European summer tour
Dave Fields: Interesting you ask that as I just got an email about a possible July 4th gig in Norway! Right now, I’m still in the process of finalizing dates but so far it looks like Norway in June and July! I’ve been so lucky to gain a foothold. I love my Norwegian fans! It’s a magical country.
Roger-Z: What and when do you intend to record next?
Dave Fields: I’m working on recording a Dave Field Live CD and putting it out by Fall or early Spring of 2016.

BLUES MATTERS.COM “ALL IN” REVIEW & “ALL IN” is #5

BLUES MATTERS.COM “ALL IN” REVIEW
By Adrian Blacklee
Dave Fields has a wonderful musical pedigree across several genres and his career has already seen him get inducted into the New York Blues Hall Of Fame and win the best independent blues album in 2006 with Roxy Perry’s Back In Bluesville release, it is only recently that he has decided to push forward and concentrate on his own musical career.
This album kicks off with high octane doses of rocking blues with Dave demonstrating he is a notable ‘Guitar Slingers’, when you consider his additional talents of song writer, vocalist and producer you can see he really is a stand out artist. The supporting musicians cover the key rhythm areas with everything else left to Dave to weave his magic, two tracks worthy of mention are songs that are probably not strong blues themed ones but have aspects that highlight Dave’s versatility: Dragon Fly which has progressive mystical undertones with a slow guitar led intro and Lovers Holiday which is an acoustic unplugged raw love song performed solo, one of two covers is Led Zeppelin’s Black Dog which was recorded live in Norway with local musicians and is given a unique re-working, the guitar work is exceptional.
While being predominately a rocking blues album there is plenty of variety on show here highlighting that not only is Dave Fields a quality musician but he is prepared to stretch the blues boundaries and not be constrained by them.
Wow…! Thanks Adrian! I’m so excited that “ALL IN” is currently #5 on The RMR Top 50 Blues Rock charts! Yeah baby!
